President-elect Guatemala, Bernardo Arevalo de León stated that he was “watching a coup” due to recent actions against his party, just under 5 months before his inauguration.

Arévalo accused Attorney General and Minister Consuelo Porras, a criminal judge and the Congressional Board of Directors, led by the official party, of coup supporters.

“These actions represent a revolution facilitated by the institutions that should guarantee justice in our country,” said Arevalo de León, who was elected in the second round on August 20.

The 64-year-old academician turned to the population with a request for “your support” and appealed to “protect the most sacred thing – voting.”

Persecution of Arevalo de Leon

The persecution of Arevalo de León and his party began after his unexpected entry into the second round of elections on 25 July.

Since July 12, prosecutors and criminal judge Fredi Orellana have been trying to dissolve the party due to an alleged case of false signatures during the party’s creation in 2018.

This Friday, the Organization of American States (OAS) warned that “Democratic stability” in Guatemala under threat for judicial interference in the electoral process.

In addition, the OAS approved the granting of “large powers” to Secretary General Luis Almagro to oversee the transfer of command in Guatemala.
