Ongoing drought has helped unearth nearly 70 dinosaur tracks at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas, USA. The nearly 110 million-year-old tracks were hidden under the water and mud of the Peluxe River, which runs through the state park.

Experts think that the traces discovered belong to two different dinosaur species. In particular, the three-legged tracks were probably those of the giant predatory Acrocanthosaurus, and the elephant-like tracks were left on the ground by a huge, long-necked Sauroposeidon.

Acrocanthosaurus was one of North America’s largest predators during the Early Cretaceous (145-101 million years ago), measuring about 12 meters in length. However, it has been eclipsed by the long-necked Sauroposeidon, a species of sauropod that was about 30 meters long and weighed as much as 50 metric tons, according to the Natural History Museum in London.

The nonprofit organization that maintains the park, the Friends of Dinosaur Valley State Parks, first noticed the tracks on Friday, August 25, and announced it was “the largest number of tracks we’ve ever seen at this location.”

“It’s not normal for us, but after two years of high temperatures and drought, it gave us the opportunity to explore new avenues.” said. Paul Baker of the Friends of Dinosaur Valley State Parks. “As soon as it rains well, most of the tracks will be hidden again.”

Meanwhile, when the opportunity arises, Dallas Paleontological Society members plan to map and mold the tracks for future research. Source
