The development of NASA brought the creation of flying machines closer to reality

For more than a century, humanity has dreamed of flying cars. But their spread has previously been blocked for a variety of reasons, from the complexity of production to the difficulty of parking. The American company found a way out.

Flying cars often appear in science fiction movies about the future. Despite the hopes of the production designers, such means of transportation seemed like impossible projects. But Applied eVTOL Concepts said it was able to create a potentially working concept vehicle that could move through the air by 2023. It is based on a propulsion system tested by NASA engineers.

new flying car

In August 2023, Applied eVTOL Concepts presented the Epiphany Transporter project. This is the trade name for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicle. According to company representatives, the car will be able to reach a top speed of up to 258 km/h and the noise level will be less than 55 dB at an altitude of 15 m. For comparison, the noise level of the shower is 50 dB, while the noise level of a normal conversation is 60 dB.

Why are channel motors a scientific breakthrough?

At the heart of the project are the ducted engines on the sides and rear of the Epiphany Transporter. In 2002, scientists from NASA’s Ames Research Center discovered that such devices can create significant thrust, the physical force that moves helicopters. In addition, the air-conducting design has the advantage of sealing the rotating vanes inside the air duct, minimizing the possibility of breakage.

Improvement of old development

Rob Bulaga, engineer on the Epiphany Transporter project, is co-author of a 2002 scientific paper on channel propulsion. In the 20 years since the first tests at Ames, the design has been improved. Michael Moshier, founder, CEO and chief designer of Applied eVTOL Concepts, believes his people have greatly improved the original NASA technology. He stated: “We have every reason to believe that our patented, field-proven ducted engines and advanced vehicle design will perform as expected in flight.”.

The future of flying cars

The flying car is designed for two people who can take their luggage with them. The company says the Epiphany will be roughly the same size as the Tesla Model S and will fit in a standard one-car garage.

The fact that the company’s ducted engine has successfully passed the test in the wind tunnel does not mean that flying cars will appear in the near future. However, it is common engineering practice to use already proven designs as the basis for other projects; so maybe Project Epiphany will eventually become a reality. Source
