At the moment we are only talking about Europe. There, at Meta, as with many other companies, there has been constant conflicts lately with increasingly confidential legislation. Facebook and Instagram are known to make money mostly by trading user data, selling the information to ad agencies and individual companies for ad targeting. Therefore, it is natural for politicians to be concerned about this process and try to regulate it by creating discomfort for social networks.

How is it going to be?

The apps themselves will remain free in the future. Subscription will allow users to avoid seeing ads on Instagram and Facebook. According to Mark Zuckerberg, Threads won’t have this feature for a few more years, and the new social network in the EU isn’t working yet for the same reasons.

The offer will prevent data collection by giving users the option to voluntarily give their data to the company and see ads, or pay a certain amount and opt out. This is expected to combat privacy concerns and EU scrutiny, but it’s unclear whether legislators are happy with this approach.

Currently some no details on launch date or subscription cost.

It’s also possible that because the subscription was so successful and the company was chasing profits, it decided to expand its subscription function to other regions. Instagram and Facebook are so full of ads these days that sometimes it may seem like posts aren’t interrupted by ads, but ads are interrupted by posts. So users, at least some of them, will definitely want to get rid of the annoying marketing in feeds and stories.

  • As a reminder, in response to recent laws in the EU, company Meta will allow users in the region to completely disable suggestions on Instagram and Facebook.
  • It has also started to offer the option to disable targeted advertising – the user will still see it, but it will be untargeted, meaning it will not rely on the analysis of their data and therefore will be inaccurate.
