smartphone work

A reader survey by our editors shows that 58 percent of IT professionals still receive a smartphone from their employer, with or without a free choice of device. Every fourth person pays for their smartphone and mobile phone subscription themselves.

Since the flip phone era, it’s not uncommon for companies to buy mobile devices for their employees. This also applies to IT professionals, as shown by a survey conducted by our editors among more than two hundred readers. 58 percent of IT professionals own a company smartphone from their employer, 42 percent bought it themselves.

There are several reasons why a company phone can still be of interest to employers and employees today. The employer ensures that employees have the equipment needed to perform their jobs, while the employee can access the latest and most expensive models on the market without having to bear the initial cost. A company smartphone is also an attractive fringe benefit from an accounting/tax perspective.

Free choice or not?

How free is the employee in choosing the smartphone? 22 percent were allowed to choose the device themselves within an agreed budget; In 21 percent, the employer decides. Fifteen percent find the happy medium and let employees select a device via a curated company web shop, in which a selection of preferred models is offered.

Pay yourself

About four out of ten IT professionals buy their work smartphone themselves. For fourteen percent, the employer continues to intervene directly in the mobile phone contract. Around one in four, or 28 percent to be precise, pays both for the device and for the subscription itself. In this case, there may also be the possibility that the employer reimburses part of the costs indirectly via an expense allowance.

Therefore, it is still common for employees working in an IT position to use their employer’s smartphone. However, the proportion of employees with a company smartphone varies greatly depending on the industry and job.

SD Worx, the largest social secretariat in Belgium, estimates that 15 percent of employees across all sectors have a smartphone or tablet that they can also use privately. This is the result of figures that it communicates to our editorial team. For employees it is twenty percent, for managers even forty percent. Distance can also play a role: the further someone lives from work, the greater the chance of having a smartphone at their disposal.
