A study by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam found that choosing native apps over the web versions is more energy efficient online when given the choice.

Seven researchers from VU University Amsterdam examined a number of differences between native Android apps and their web version. This research showed that using the former consumes much less energy than using a mobile browser.

numbers and figures

The researchers conducted their tests for five categories:

  • News —ESPN and The Weather Channel
  • social media – LinkedIn and Pinterest
  • Ecommerce – Coupang & Shopee
  • audio streaming – SoundCloud and Spotify
  • streaming video – Twitch and YouTube

All ten of these platforms offer their services both via a native Android app and via a (mobile) website.

Not only the energy consumption (expressed in joules) was tested. The volume of network traffic, CPU utilization, memory usage and, if applicable, the loading time between video frames were also weighed against each other. The web versions were only tested on Chrome, as this browser has the largest market share.

Native apps consumed 371.13J compared to 567.44J for the other web versions. In addition, apps put less strain on the CPU, their operation consumes less memory (0.24 GB vs. 1.76 GB), and they load videos faster. Running web versions costs less network traffic: 21.96 MB compared to 39.42 MB.

With this conclusion, the researchers recommend that you mainly use the native app if you have that option. Energy consumption and climate are more relevant than ever. For a week now, developers have been able to get started with three new Google APIs with a focus on sustainability. Earlier this month, IBM launched a tool to track greenhouse gas emissions from cloud services.
