As we can read in this publication, Spotify wouldn’t directly confirm this test, but said it does all kinds of tests periodically to evaluate user uptake and the suitability (or lack thereof) of maintaining or reversing them. So at this point we don’t know if it will remain a failed experiment or if it will be established with a permanent change. We can imagine that the answer to this question will very directly depend on the number of users who use the given link to convert their free accounts to premium accounts.
