Microsoft is about to launch a new Teams app on macOS. The public preview will be released later this month and to prepare users now, Microsoft has published a list of technical specifications. Your device must be updated to at least macOS 11 Big Sur and Teams to version 1.6.00.12303.
When it’s your turn to try the new Teams app, you’ll see a scroll bar in the top right. You can also use this button to go back if you don’t like the new version. Only users with admin privileges are allowed to install the new Teams client themselves or on the devices they remotely manage within their organization. Enabling notifications and screen sharing is also recommended for the new version.
The new Teams macOS app isn’t just an update. Microsoft claims to have built the app from scratch. This was also urgently needed, because the Electron framework on which Teams runs is outdated and too energy-intensive. Microsoft is moving to WebView2, the engine it already uses to support the Edge browser, for example. That should result in a Teams client that’s faster, lighter, and more economical.
Microsoft is doing the same renovations to the Teams Windows app. They are much further and the preview has even been available since March. The new Teams app could be available to all users by October. The nationwide rollout for macOS is probably planned for earlier in 2024 given the long time it took Microsoft to test the Windows version.
The differences between the two versions should be minimal, but OnMFST found that some features are missing from the macOS app. The new green screens, cameo function and NDI streams would not be supported.
