Just a few hours ago, we told you that the Nintendo Switch 2 made an appearance at GamesCom 2023, although it was a closed-door event and only a few lucky people saw it. During this presentation, the console moved an enhanced technical demo of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, and thanks to new information, we were able to find out that the matter went much further.

New information ensures that it was also possible to see during this presentation Nintendo Switch 2 Matrix Awakens moving demo. Yes, the demo that impressed us so much back then, which uses the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine. This engine is ready to get the most out of the current generation of consoles, so of course it’s quite an achievement that the new Nintendo console was able to run this demo smoothly.

As I already told you in the title, one of the most important keys that allowed Matrix Awakens to run smoothly on Nintendo Switch 2 was NVIDIA DLSS technology in Super Resolution version. It performs an intelligent image scaling and reconstruction process and takes advantage of the acceleration provided by the tensor cores of GeForce RTX 20 and higher GPUs.

Those of you who read us daily will remember that everything seems to indicate that the Nintendo Switch 2 will use NVIDIA’s custom Tegra SoC, and that said chip it will have a GPU based on the Ampere architecture. This means it will have 3rd generation RT cores to accelerate ray tracing and 4th generation tensor cores to accelerate artificial intelligence.

It is important to note that Unreal Engine 5 is a very demanding graphics engine and the fact that Nintendo Switch 2 was able to move this demo clearly indicates that after all, this console may not be so far from the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Mind you, it wouldn’t be brute force, but in this case DLSS Super Resolution technology would be the key.

To give you an idea of how important this technology can be, Nintendo itself has collected references to scaling in various patents that it says could starting with a base resolution of 540p and rebuilding and upscaling to 1080p. This would be equivalent to using DLSS Super Resolution set to performance mode, and the result on a screen of just 8 inches should be really good.

It’s a topic I’ve mentioned to you on previous occasions, that technologies like DLSS Super Resolution represents tremendous value in a portable console, both in portable mode and in docked mode. We must not forget that with this technology it is also possible to reduce the GPU utilization rate and that it has a significant impact on battery consumption, which means that it can also help to improve autonomy. This is something I’ve been able to confirm with many of the GeForce RTX laptops I’ve reviewed in recent years.
