The use of PlayStation controllers on PC has quietly increased in recent years, encouraging some developers to consider them compatible (the Resident Evil 4 remake and Persona 5 Royal are two examples). Following this trend, which is slowly increasing, Valve has taken a step to make it possible list which Steam games are compatible with DualSense and DualShock 4 as of October this year.
In order for users to purchase games compatible with the DualShock 4 or DualSense, Valve has included a new questionnaire on Steamworks for developers to indicate whether their games are compatible with one or both controllers, or at least that’s what it explained in a post published on its developer blog .
Developers can go to the “Edit Store Page” section of each game in Steamworks to set up controller support. From there you can access a questionnaire that allows you to identify the level of compatibility with different drivers and the criteria that each title meets.
One of the things will be preserved, the indication “Full Driver Compatibility” or “Partial Driver Compatibility” will be present on the platform, but a preview of what end users will see through the store will also be added, distinguishing whether that full or partial compatibility includes Xbox controllers, DualShock 4 and DualSense (the PlayStation 5 controller, in case anyone is confused by the name).
Starting in October, Steam users will see a new presentation of driver support, including improvements to the area of the store page that displays driver support and also specifies the driver usage level. for PlayStation, updates to some search pages to make it easier for players to find new games that are compatible with their controller, improvements to the Steam desktop client to list which games are compatible with PlayStation controllers in the library, and updates to the Steam desktop client to make it clear whether games require the use of controllers to play.
Persona 5 Royal comes from Steam and was played on Linux with a DualShock 4.
The Steam dev blog post isn’t very explicit about the spec of this, but We assume that the file for each game published on the platform will indicate the compatibility level for the DualShock 4, DualSense and Xbox controllers.. Instructions will be displayed through both the official app and the web browser.
Is it worth betting more on PlayStation controller support on PC? Valve itself is responsible for explaining that “as of 2017, more than 87 million Steam users have played with a controller at least once. Most of these players (around 69%) used some variation of Xbox controllers, while the rest used a combination of PlayStation controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and hundreds of other devices. In 2018, PlayStation controllers were used in 11% of controller gaming sessions. On the other hand, today this type of controller is used in 27% of gaming sessions“.
In short, PlayStation controllers have quite a presence on PC. The rise in use of the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers on PC can be attributed to the great success of the Japanese consoles. To this we can add some players who may be used to the peripherals of these consoles and do not intend to adapt again to one from another brand.
Valve’s client has a Steam input that allows PlayStation controllers to be used in many games that do not have official support for these peripherals, although this is in exchange for showing Xbox inputs in the game interface on many occasions. Of course, compatibility isn’t perfect, as there are games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order where it seems broken.
