NASA astronauts 3D printed the meniscus of the knee joint in space for the first time.

As reported by Ukrinform, Space.com.

Printing of the knee joint meniscus on the International Space Station (ISS) was achieved thanks to the 3D printer of the Florida company Redwire Corp.

This important effort will improve the treatment of knee problems common among military personnel and the elderly.

“This is a groundbreaking milestone with significant implications for human health,” said Redwire Executive Vice President John Wellinger.

The meniscus was already analyzed on Earth after the Crew-6 astronauts returned to Earth on September 4.

It is stated that Redwire currently has 10 research centers operating on the ISS and more research will be conducted soon.

In November, Redwire will deliver a variety of pharmaceutical cargoes to SpaceX’s CRS-29 mission. Among these is an experiment on bioprinting heart tissue.

As reported by Ukrinform, the American space agency NASA, together with the company Redwire and the Military Medical University (Maryland), will send a 3D bioprinter to the International Space Station to print the meniscus of the knee joint.
