At least The magnitude 7 earthquake killed 296 people and injured 153 occurred on Friday evening with an epicenter 60 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh, Morocco.

Morocco’s Interior Ministry said in a note that until 2:00 local time (GMT+1), deaths were recorded in the provinces and prefectures of Al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant.

Marrakesh neighbors explained EFE the fear subsided during the aftershock, which lasted several minutes and caused damage to buildings and mosques in Medina.

Khalid, a resident of Medina, pointed out that the minaret Bab Ailan Mosque collapsed due to earthquake and the entrance to the temple was also damaged.

Another Marrakech resident explained that after the earthquake the mythical square of Jma el-Fnaa was filled with people trying to escape about possible tremors and that the authorities did not allow citizens to walk along the narrow streets of the ancient city.

Witnesses contacted EFE They pointed out that the earthquake was felt in northern cities such as Larache, 550 kilometers from the epicenter, and in Casablanca and Rabat, 300 and 370 kilometers respectively, where their residents took to the streets to prevent tremors. (EFE)
