In the evening (September 8), SpaceX launched 22 more Starlink satellites into orbit and landed the returning rocket on a ship at sea. A Falcon 9 rocket launched the Starlink spacecraft from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 23:12 ET (03:12 GMT) today (September 8).
Tonight, Falcon 9’s first stage returned to Earth for landing approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff, landing with SpaceX’s unmanned spacecraft, Gravitas’ Lack, parked in the Atlantic Ocean. According to SpaceX’s mission statement, this was the seventh launch and landing of that launch vehicle.
The 22 Starlink satellites are scheduled to be deployed from the Falcon 9 upper module approximately 65 minutes after launch. The launch was SpaceX’s 63rd launch of 2023, extending the company’s record by another year. The previous target, 61, was set in 2022.
More than half of this year’s launches are devoted to the development of Starlink, which currently consists of more than 4,600 active satellites.
