The Hubble Space Telescope photographed the galaxy NGC 3156, located in the Sextant constellation.

This was reported by the ESA observatory, according to Ukrinform’s report.

The space object is located approximately 73 million light-years from Earth.

It is stated that Sextant is a small constellation belonging to the Hercules family of constellations. It is an astronomically themed constellation named after the sextant, a navigation tool invented in the 18th century.

However, the sextant as an astronomical instrument has been around for much longer: Islamic scholars developed astronomical sextants to measure angles in the sky hundreds of years ago.

A particularly striking example is the huge sextant with a radius of 36 meters, located in the city of Samarkand in modern Uzbekistan, designed by Ulugbek of the Timurid dynasty in the 15th century.

Sextants are no longer used in modern astronomy, replaced by instruments that can measure the positions of stars and astronomical objects much more accurately.

The discoverer of NGC 3156 is German-born British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel, who first observed the object on December 13, 1784.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Hubble space telescope took a photo of the spiral galaxy IC 1776 located in the constellation Pisces.
