Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today that Apple is testing e-ink color display technology for implementation in advanced devices of the future, such as the iPhone or iPad.
Kuo said on Twitter that the electronic ink display could be used for an external display in a sophisticated device, while a larger composite display would use more advanced display technology. Kuo added that color displays with electronic ink would be much more energy efficient than other display formats.
Apple is reportedly planning to first launch a 9-inch folding tablet, which is somewhere between “iPhone” and “iPad” based on the specs of the screen, around 2025. Kuo believes that Apple’s roadmap for advanced devices will initially focus on medium-sized devices, then large-screen devices, and eventually expand to smaller devices such as the iPhone.
