Wonderlust is less than 24 hours away, an Apple event in which we will finally see the next generation of its smartphone, the iPhone 15 in its more than predictable four variants. They won’t be the only protagonists, of course, because as we told you yesterday, they will share the bill at least with the new generation of smart watches from Cupertino and maybe with some new AirPods, even if it already enters a little deeper into the waters of the sea of speculation. Whatever the case, it will undoubtedly be one of the most important events of the year in the tech world.
As for the iPhone 15, It’s been more than a year since the first rumors started to appear (yes, even before the introduction of the iPhone 14) and, as is tradition, we arrived at the Apple event this year with a truly complete list of the specifications of this future generation. Apple has proven over the years that it has a far greater knack for technology than it does for keeping secrets.
At the moment when we can almost consider the main new features of Apple’s latest development fully revealed, some of the interest will focus on other aspects, and in this particular case, one that can have very different values on both sides of the spectrum. Atlantic. I mean, of course, that the iPhone 15 aims to be the generation in which Apple is finally abandoning its proprietary Lightning connector to adopt the now virtually universal USB-C.
We have been very aware of this in Europe for some time This change will not be made due to Apple’s interest in adopting a universal port. No, in fact, the tech company has been speaking out against the measure for years, but it didn’t sit too well on this side of the Atlantic, with the EU approving a unified USB-C charger in October 2022. This means that since the approval of the two-year moratorium, all smartphones sold in the European Union must have a USB-C charging port from October 4, 2024.
It was leaked earlier this year that Apple would consider limiting the charging speed via the USB-C port unless the user uses an official cable (from Apple or the Made for iPhone program), but while this has not been officially confirmed (at least publicly), European regulators quickly notified the company , that even this will not be allowed under the new regulations. So it seems that Apple will have no choice but to adopt the market standard, and do it on the same terms as other manufacturers.
So knowing that this is the situation, How do you think the jump from Lightning to USB-C will be announced at the event? Personally, I do not rule out that they avoid referring to the connector in this way and that instead they talk about the new Thunderbolt port and that after the introduction of this change they will “sell” it to us as another of the many innovations that the company does in the usual way. And in this regard, it should be borne in mind that although the scope of the action is global, it mainly targets the American market, where European regulations are much less known.
So, while of course I could be wrong, I think they either won’t mention it at all, or if they do, they’ll sell it as if it’s their own decision, which would be a complete 180 degree turn.
