Chilean President Gabriel Boric defended democracy and human rights during a speech marking the anniversary of General Augusto Pinochet’s coup that ousted then-President-elect Salvador Allende.

After observing an emotional moment of silence in memory of the victims and hearing a speech from Senator Isabel Allende, the daughter of a Chilean politician, Boric took the floor and remembered those who were imprisoned, tortured, missing and killed during the remembrance ceremony held at the Palacio de la Moneda.

Borich said that “the revolt is inseparable” “from what followed” and made it clear that “the color of the regime that violates human rights does not matter.” “Be it red, blue or black, they should always be respected and their violation condemned without any nuance,” he said.

The President of Chile said that “democracy is the only way to build a more just and humane society.” “So we exposed ourselves when there was no other alternative. Of course there was another alternative!”

Boric also dedicated a few words to the memory of those who saved lives “anonymously,” as well as “the international solidarity that spread from the first hours of the coup,” which was caused by “the force of planes, tanks and weapons, as well as the audacity of treason and rebellion.”
