Kim Jong Un arrives in Russia for ‘in-depth discussion’ with Putin

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in Russia, Japanese media reported Tuesday, for in-depth discussions with President Vladimir Putin, amid warnings from Washington that they should not agree to an arms treaty.

Kim left Pyongyang for Russia on Sunday on his personal train, accompanied by senior military industry and military officials and the foreign minister, his country’s state media reported Tuesday.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed Russian official source, that the train carrying Kim had arrived at Khasan Station, the main railway gateway to the Russian Far East from North Korea.

“This will be a full-fledged visit,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “Negotiations will take place between the two delegations, and then, if necessary, the leaders will continue to communicate individually.”

A spokesman for Hassan declined to comment on reports of Kim’s arrival.

Putin was expected to arrive in Vladivostok on Tuesday, where he was due to take part in the main session of the Eastern Economic Forum, which will last until Wednesday. His meetings with Kim will take place on the sidelines of the forum, although it is not specified where exactly or whether the North Korean leader will take part in the event.

U.S. officials, who first said the visit was imminent, said arms talks between Russia and North Korea were moving forward and that Kim and Putin were likely to discuss arms supplies for the war in Ukraine.

Pyongyang and Moscow deny that North Korea will supply weapons to Russia, which has used up huge stockpiles of weapons in more than 18 months of war.

Washington and its allies have expressed concern over recent signs of closer military cooperation between Russia and the nuclear-armed North. This will be Kim’s second summit with Putin after their meeting in 2019.
