Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has chosen General Atomics to develop a drone that will be launched from a fighter jet. American company will create drones as part of program Long shot. The drone will be equipped with air-to-air missiles and its launch platform will be fighter jets.

The new concept is primarily intended to expand the capabilities of fourth-generation fighter aircraft. Drones equipped with air-to-air missiles will be able to increase the range and effectiveness of missions.

So far, there is no information on which aircraft the new UAVs will be used on. The same goes for weapons. However, the image shows the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile being launched from the warplane. F-15 Eagle.

In addition to increasing range, LongShot will also increase the survivability of manned aircraft. DARPA believes the new drones will be useful for both the US Air Force and the US Navy. Source
