On Tuesday, September 12, a hearing began in federal court in Washington in a lawsuit against Google that alleges the company’s illegal actions in its bid to become the world’s dominant search engine.

As reported by Ukrinform, Daily Morning.

The article states that the antitrust case filed against Google is the largest case in the USA in the last decade.

The trial will last ten weeks, during which time the company, with the participation of more than 100 witnesses, will convince Judge Amit Mehta that the case filed by the Department of Justice is meritless. Dozens of US states, led by the state of Colorado, also joined the testimony against the company.

Google’s lawsuit centers on the government’s claim that the tech giant unfairly dominates online search by signing exclusive contracts with device makers, mobile carriers and other companies, including Apple, that leave rivals no chance to compete.

With billions of dollars in annual payments to these companies, Google has secured the default status of its search engine on phones and web browsers, the report said.

The alleged victims of this case include other search engines such as Microsoft Bing and DuckDuckGo.

Google remains the most popular search engine, capturing 90% of the market in the US and worldwide. Most users use Google through iPhones and Android phones.

As Ukrinform reported, in July the European Commission launched a formal investigation to determine whether Microsoft had violated EU competition rules.
