The new A17 Bionic chip aims for significantly better graphics performance. The iPhone 15 Pro still has a 3x zoom lens, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 5x zoom lens. Both have USB-C on board, which supports USB 3.

While the new iPhone 15 adopts numerous functions from last year’s iPhone 14 Pro, Apple is going full throttle with the new iPhone 15 Pro models. The aluminum chassis remains, but the surrounding edge is now made of titanium. The four colors are rather sober: white, black, blue and of course titanium.

Apple claims the new iPhone 15 Pro is easier to repair. It is not clear what this means in practice. The screen is identical to last year’s model, including “Dynamic Island”, 120 Hz refresh rate and always-on function. The iPhone 15 Pro has a 6.1-inch screen, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a larger 6.7-inch screen.

New is the action button, which replaces the mute/call button. This button still does the same thing by default, but you can also personalize the button to use things like a camera hotkey, flashlight, or translation service.

A17 Bionic chip

Unlike the iPhone 15, both iPhone 15 Pro models will have the latest A17 Bionic chip on board. It is the world’s first 3nm chip, guaranteeing better battery life and performance. The CPU has six cores, two of which are performance cores, which, according to Apple, are ten percent faster than its predecessor.

Since the iPhone 15 Pro now also has USB-C, there is a dedicated USB controller on the chip that can deliver USB 3 speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s.

The integrated GPU has six cores and is twenty percent faster than last year’s A16 Bionic.

New periscope lens

At the presentation, Apple placed great emphasis on the new cameras of the iPhone 15 Pro. The 48MP main camera gets a larger sensor for better low-light performance. The wide-angle lens remains identical to the previous generation, but gets a new coating on the lens and a better night mode.

As with previous models, the iPhone 15 Pro has to make do with a 3x telephoto camera. It’s the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max that gets an upgrade to a 5x telephoto lens thanks to a periscope lens in the larger body.

For enthusiasts, spatial video will be possible on both phones later this year by combining the wide-angle and standard cameras. Apple is doing everything it can to provide the upcoming Apple Vision Pro VR glasses with tailored content.

Price and availability

The basic version of the iPhone 15 Pro is available from 1,229 euros for 128 GB of storage. The entry-level model of the iPhone 15 Pro Max comes with 256 GB of storage and starts at 1,479 euros. Both phones will be available from September 22nd. All prices quoted include VAT.
