The new Apple iPhone 15 is very similar to last year’s Pro version, including the A16 Bionic chip, but without a telephoto lens and a better screen.

The “dynamic island” that eliminated the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro models is now also available on the iPhone 15. This, in combination with thinner screen edges, is the most important innovation on the front. The same refresh rate of 60 Hz is available again, which should no longer be allowed in this price range. An always-on function is also missing. Both can only be found in the Pro versions of the iPhone 14 Pro and the latest iPhone 15 Pro.

The OLED screen has a brightness of 1,600 nits with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. The iPhone 15 is available in two screen sizes: 6.1 inches (iPhone 15) and 6.7 inches (iPhone 15 Plus). Both screens are Dolby Vision certified.

Externally, the camera island on the back has been slightly changed to create a unified whole. The casing is made from 75 percent recycled aluminum, while the battery contains 100 percent recycled cobalt.

Camera and A16 Bionic

At the presentation, Apple placed great emphasis on the new camera, which has a 48 megapixel sensor. Thanks to pixel binning, this results in a 12 megapixel photo. The wide-angle lens is available again, the telephoto lens is reserved for the more expensive Pro models.

Apple introduces “lossless” 2x zoom by taking a photo at depth at the center of the image sensor. Alternatively, you can simply zoom in on a photo after saving it at the full 48 megapixels.

The manufacturer also speaks of a new night mode and better HDR photos. The front camera remains unchanged.

No new chip for the iPhone 15. Apple supplies the same A16 Bionic chip as in last year’s Pro models.

Price and availability

Finally, the biggest innovation is the USB-C connector. Under pressure from the European Union, Lightning is thrown in the trash. Both iPhone 15 models have USB-C on the bottom. As before, wireless charging is also possible via MagSafe or another Qi-compatible charger.

The iPhone 15 is available in five colors: yellow, pink, green, black and blue. Prices start at 969 euros for the iPhone 15 with 128 GB of storage. The iPhone 15 Plus is available from 1,119 euros for 128 GB of storage. All prices include VAT. Both phones will be available from September 22nd.
