WHO recommends at-risk groups to get vaccinated against Covid-19

World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed this Thursday its recommendation to all people belonging to risk groups -for example, people over 65 years of age or with chronic diseases- Get vaccinated against Covid-19, which is actively circulating in some parts of the world.

“The virus is still with us, and vaccines prevent severe cases and deaths“, said the head of the WHO anti-Covid technical cell, Maria Van Herkove, at a press conference in Geneva.

He clarified that the organization receives reports from countries America and Europe through increase in hospitalizations and patients those requiring care in intensive care units.

Globally, vaccination coverage for people aged 65 years and over is 82% based on the initial vaccination cycle (two doses), but falls to 58% for those who received a booster dose (8% in Africa).

Von Herkow recalled that the virus continues to change and that WHO is tracking new variants based on data provided by countries.

A group of experts advising WHO on vaccinations will meet before the end of the month to update their recommendations on Covid-19 vaccines.
