US Attorney confirms extradition

One of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s sons arrived in the United States this Friday after being extradited from Mexico.

“This action is the latest step in the Justice Department’s efforts to attack every aspect of the activities” of the Sinaloa cartel, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said.

Guzman, who was arrested by Mexican authorities in January of this year, was one of Washington’s most wanted drug traffickers for his involvement in the fentanyl trade and now faces a number of federal charges in various courts across the country.

The prosecutor thanked the government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for handing over Guzman and assured that the United States will continue to work to bring to justice “those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic that has devastated communities across the country.”

In April of this year, a US court brought charges in three different federal districts against Guzman and his three brothers for allegedly taking over leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel following the arrest and subsequent extradition of their father to the United States.

The Sinaloa Cartel, “the most powerful in the world”

The charges in the federal districts of Southern New York, Northern Illinois and the District of Columbia were filed as part of an investigation into “the largest and most prolific fentanyl trafficking operation in the world” led by the aforementioned cartel and “fueled by Chinese pharmaceutical companies.”

The Sinaloa Cartel, according to Washington, is “the most powerful cartel in the world” and is largely responsible for the production and manufacture of fentanyl for distribution in the United States, where the drug, considered 50 times more powerful than heroin, is the “most powerful cartel in the world”. leading cause of death among Americans ages 18 to 49.”

El Raton arrested in January

The Mexican army detained Guzman on January 5 in the northern state of Sinaloa and then transferred him to the Altiplano, also known as Almoloya prison, located in the state of Mexico, where he was also being held. imprisoned his father, who escaped from there in 2015.

The arrest was unexpected because it came days before US President Joe Biden’s visit to Mexico for a summit of North American leaders, although Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has denied any connection between the two events.

The US, which has offered $5 million for his capture since December 2021, accuses the alleged drug trafficker of crimes related to conspiracy to import drugs into this country. (According to EFE)
