He Texas Attorney General, Ken PaxtonA controversial ally Donald trumpwas acquitted this Saturday at political process in the state Senate they are seeking his removal for corruption.

After two weeks of deliberations, a majority of House Republicans acquitted Paxton of 16 charges he was accused of, including corrupt practicesabuse of public trust and failure to perform official duties.

The Texas Senate thus allows Paxton, suspended in May, resume his duties as head of the prosecutor’s office general of the state, and this position is achieved through popular election.

The impeachment trial was initiated by Republican lawmakers after years of controversy over Paxton, but state party leadership and conservative groups have pushed for his eventual acquittal.

During the hearing, former employees of the attorney general spoke in detail about how Paxton allegedly used his position to benefit his friend and real estate businessman Nate Paul who in return paid for the renovation of his house and helped him hide his extramarital affairs with his former assistant.

The defense called the allegations “insulting” and “totally false.”

His wife is Angela Paxton. She is a Republican state senator and attended every impeachment trial, although not allowed to vote so that there is no conflict of interest.

The FBI is investigating him for corruption.

Parallel to the Senate impeachment trial, the Paxton case FBI investigates corruption in addition to allegations of fraud since 2015.

Elected last November to his third term as a Texas prosecutor, he was one of the prosecutors who asked the Supreme Court in 2020 to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the election in which he defeated Trump.

During his long political career, he was the protagonist of notorious controversies due to the fact that deceived investors when selling sharesstealing a luxury pen or running away from home to avoid being served with a subpoena, among other things.

So far, only two Texas officials have been impeached: a governor in 1917 and a circuit judge in 1976 (EFE).
