A small plane crashed this Saturday in the middle Amazon resulting in the deaths of at least 14 people; The victims were on board, and all of them were Brazilian citizens.

It was initially believed that Americans were among the dead.

The small plane, an Embraer EMB-110 “Bandeirante” turboprop, took off from Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, bound for Barcelos, about 400 kilometers away, where tourists had booked a fishing trip.

It crashed shortly before landing during heavy rains in the remote jungle region this Saturday, officials said.

The mayor of Barcelos, Edson Mendes, confirmed that 14 people were traveling on the plane, two of whom were members of the plane’s crew, and that there were no survivors.

Amazonas State Governor Wilson Lima noted that although initially suspected, no Americans were among the dead tourists and they were all Brazilian, as were the two crew members.

Barcelos is a small city located in the middle of the Amazon jungle, which relies on agriculture and tourism, and one of its main attractions is sport fishing.

According to authorities, the bodies will be transferred to Manaus, which will happen this Sunday due to storms that have hit the Amazon city and because the small airport of Barcelos is closed at night due to its technical limitations.

The plane belonged to a Manaus-based air taxi company that has been operating for more than a decade, according to aviation authorities. (EFE)
