Last month, Microsoft announced that Teams would no longer be bundled with Microsoft 365 starting in October. The company made this decision due to a threatened lawsuit from the EU. However, Europe is not impressed and the threat is far from gone.
Microsoft will no longer bundle Teams with Microsoft 365 starting in October as the European Commission conducts an antitrust investigation. Anyone who takes out such a subscription after September 30th must purchase the communications platform services separately. According to sources contacted by Bloomberg, this may not be enough and the EU is ready to formulate a number of objections.
It all started three years ago with a complaint about unfair competition from another communication platform: Slack from Salesforce. Then the EU got to work and at the beginning of July there was a threat of the first antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft in Europe in about a decade. Before the end of the month, the official investigation was a fact.
As a gesture of goodwill and of course to avert a complaint, Microsoft announced the separation of Teams from the 365 package. The latter would therefore immediately experience a price drop.
According to internal sources, all of this no longer seems to be enough. The European Commission is currently working on a list of comments and objections that will be sent to Microsoft within a few months. Unfortunately, it is not yet known what exactly this list will contain.
