Omdia has made an informed estimate of how many H100 processors Nvidia sold in the second quarter of fiscal 2024. The research firm changed these numbers in an original way, looking at the weight of GPU inventory shipped.

Manufacturer Nvidia has more than ten billion dollars of hardware sold for data centers on its books for the second quarter of 2024. That’s a lot of processors. Research agency Omdia used this information to examine how many H100 GPUs Nvidia shipped this quarter alone. It turns out there were literally tons, reports Tom’s Hardware.

calculation

According to an estimate by Omdia, an H100 GPU including the heat sink weighs just over three kilograms. This is a combination of the 1.2 kilogram H100 PCIe card and a two kilogram SXM or OAM module.

Omdia assumes a ratio of eighty percent modules and twenty percent cards, which results in an average of 1.84 kilograms. That would mean Nvidia would have sold a whopping 900 tons of H100 GPUs in a single quarter.

A look into the future

Omdia expects the same sales figures for the coming quarters. So Nvidia could end up with 3,600 tons, or about 1.2 million H100 GPUs sold.

That’s not an unrealistic number given the current AI boom, which is what these processors are primarily intended for. There’s a good chance that Nvidia will increase production and sales because despite these impressive numbers, demand still exceeds supply. Manufacturer TSMC even warned of a shortage. The reports of a tripling of production next year are therefore no surprise.
