Although support has officially ended, Microsoft has still rolled out a security update for Edge for Windows 7/8.1 users. However, this will be an exception.

Earlier this year, Microsoft continued support for Windows 7 and 8.1. That meant no more security updates for the operating system, but also no more new versions of the Edge browser. In the outdated versions of Windows, the counter stopped at Edge 109, while the current version is already Edge 116.

In this case, it is a rather exceptional security update that closes some acute vulnerabilities in the browser and does not add any new functionality. Among other things, the patch fixes a vulnerability that uses WebP files to “overflow” memory with faulty code. Several browsers released an emergency update for it last week.

Who doesn’t want to hear that?

Windows 7 and 8.1 users certainly shouldn’t expect Microsoft to make this a habit. The software giant will no longer reverse its decision to no longer support Edge on outdated versions of Windows. Chrome and Firefox have also made this decision, the latter with a one-year delay to September 2024.

Anyone who continues to use Windows 7 and 8.1 despite all the warnings will have to cope sooner or later. A recent survey among our readers shows that around four percent of IT users still own a PC running an older version of Windows.
