Microsoft is rolling out two updates for MS Paint in the Canary and Dev insider channels. The app now supports layers (Layers) and for transparency (transparency).

There are two updates for Microsoft Paint coming. In the Canary and Dev Insider channels, versions 11.2308.18.0 and later, users of the legendary app now enjoy layering and transparency support.

Layering

Creative minds can now add and remove layers from their digital canvas. This should add a bit of complexity to the digital artwork you can generate with the app. The new Layers button on the taskbar lets you place elements like text or shapes and objects on top of each other.

The button opens a panel on the side of your canvas. In this section you can see what impact each layer has on your final result. You can also hide, duplicate, or merge layers into a new one.

Pleasantly transparent

Thanks to transparency support, you can now open and save transparent PNG files. When working with just one layer, you can see the grid’s boxes indicating which part of the image is transparent.

If you now delete something in the image, that part will no longer be shown as white, but will practically disappear. For different layers, this action will display the layer below.

These two new features will undoubtedly work well with the recent update that allows you to remove backgrounds. Not exactly in the creative mood? This will soon no longer be a problem when the AI image generator for Paint is rolled out.
