The Linux Foundation increases its focus on the energy sector and launches a new sandbox for IoT and edge. At the same time, a new collaboration with Fujitsu in the field of AI is announced.

During the Open Source Summit in Bilbao, the Linux Foundation (LF) reported that LF Energy is gradually gaining traction. It adds five new members, six major software releases and three comprehensive reports to build a growing technology ecosystem community.

Arpit Joshipura, Interim Executive Director, LF Energy: “In the last twelve months alone, LF Energy has seen a 1.25x increase in hosted projects, a 23 percent increase in unique contributors, a 15 percent increase in commits, and an 8 percent increase.” in additional lines of code across unique commits. This brings the total number of lines of code to 114 million.”

“This progress cannot come fast enough if we are to achieve the ambitious decarbonization targets set by national and international bodies.”

LF Edge Sandbox

In addition to the energy sector, LF is also focusing on edge and IoT technologies with the launch of a new sandbox to accelerate code delivery. The Edge Sandbox is a centralized system that enables developers to quickly launch proofs of concepts, demonstrations, and end-user experiences.

“The availability of the LF Edge Sandbox is a testament to the robust offering of edge computing solutions in high demand,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager of networking, edge and IoT at the Linux Foundation. “This new service makes it even easier for people and organizations to try out different LF Edge project solutions and blueprints in different formats, ultimately enabling them to be deployed more quickly.”

Fujitsu and AI

Finally, Fujitsu’s announcement on AI during the Open Source Summit also stands out. The Japanese manufacturer, together with LF, is launching new technology in the direction of automated machine learning and fair AI technologies. Both are known as SapientML and Intersectional Fairness respectively.

With both projects, the Linux Foundation wants to further democratize AI so that developers can access the latest technology from anywhere via an open platform.
