Red Hat has overhauled its open source cloud services platform. From now on, OpenStack will be known as the slightly less slick pool OpenStack services on OpenShift.
Stop saying OpenStack when talking about Red Hat’s open source cloud services platform, but yes OpenStack services on OpenShift. It is an integration with OpenShift, its platform for building and managing apps based on Kubernetes.
According to Red Hat, the explanation for this development is a logical consequence. The company says it has worked intensively on integrating both platforms in recent years. This would have helped providers scale faster and make better use of their resources.
With OpenStack Services on OpenShift, both platforms should work together even better. Customers can maintain their investments in OpenStack APIs, reducing maintenance costs. Another advantage is that you don’t have to rewrite or change OpenStack workflows.
In the new infrastructure, customers don’t have to worry about their OpenStack worker nodes. The control plane is transformed by Red Hat into an OpenShift workload without disturbing these worker nodes. In addition, the latter will continue to be updated in parallel with the OpenStack cycle.
With OpenStack Services on OpenShift, organizations can deploy, deploy, and maintain their installations from core to core faster edge. According to Red Hat, these are all things that users have been asking for for a long time.
There are many more things that Red Hat OpenStack Services will offer on OpenShift:
OpenStack Services on OpenShift are based exclusively on a next-generation form factor. The control plane is hosted on OpenShift and the external data plane is based on it Red Hat Enterprise Linux (since it is no longer completely open source) is maintained via it Ansible automation platform. The latter also recently received an AI upgrade.
You may also currently find OpenStack Services on OpenShift as OpenStack Platform 18 in the Red Hat Customer Portal. This is because supported or currently distributed versions of OpenStack still follow the old branding.
