GitHub’s AI chatbot Copilot Chat is entering general beta.

All users of GitHub Copilot for individuals now have access to a beta version of the chatbot Copilot Chat.

Copilot for the people

A beta version of the chatbot was already available to all GitHub Copilot for Business users in July. Now it’s also available for individual users in Visual Studio and VS Code.

The combination of GitHub Copilot Chat and GitHub Copilot creates a digital assistant that can support developers in the natural language they prefer. The bot is activated for free for all individual Copilot users. You will also receive an email that will guide you through the steps.

According to GitHub, anyone can now learn new languages or frameworks, fix bugs, or get answers to coding questions in a natural language without the IDE (integrated development environment) leave.

Key features of GitHub Copilot Chat include:

  • Real-time guidance: The bot can provide suggestions, tips, and solutions to specific coding challenges
  • Analysis of code: The system can break down complex concepts and explain individual pieces of code
  • Security: The bot can provide remediation suggestions and help limit the number of vulnerabilities
  • Easy troubleshooting: The bot can identify problems when debugging code, but also offer suggestions, alternatives and explanations

Microsoft recently integrated an AI chatbot powered by GitHub Copilot into Windows Terminal. Last month, the bot itself received an update that now allows it to warn users when code suggestions come from a public post.
