Greek authorities arrested a tourist for steal two pieces of marble lying on the ground in the Acropolis of Athens, A police spokesman explained this to EFE on Thursday.

The tourist, 36 years old, was taken away on Tuesday two marble fragments that lay on the groundin the Propylaea area, located on top of the Acropolis.

A security guard at the archaeological site realized that he had two fragments in his hands and called the police, who The visitor was detained on suspicion of wanting to take two fragments.

According to the local press, the arrested person stated in his defense that I didn’t know that collecting marble remains was a crime. and that it caused no damage to the monument, as the fragments were loosened.

The detainee was accused of robbery and property crime, This could carry a penalty of two years in prison and a large financial fine if found guilty, the spokesman said.

The Acropolis of Athens is one of the most visited monuments in Europe. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Earlier this month, the Greek government introduced limit of 20,000 daily visits to the Acropolis of Athens, one of the most visited monuments in Europe, to avoid overcrowding and overtourism damaging the archaeological complex.
