Google rolls out Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1 for Pixel devices

Although the stable Android 14 update is not yet available, Google unexpectedly released the first beta version of Android 14 QPR1. If you don’t know, QPR stands for Quarterly Platform Release, and these updates are usually released after Google launches a major operating system update. However, in this case, Google released the QPR1 update before Android 14 was released.

Now that Google has released it, it should get a stable version three months after distribution (since QPR is also a beta update). This means that the stable version of this update will most likely arrive in December 2023 as the Pixel Feature Pack.

In any case, the update is now rolling out to eligible Pixel devices enrolled in the beta program. If you are not registered for the beta and want to update to Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1, you can do so by going to Settings > System > System Update and tapping Check for Updates to see if there is an update to the new version. If not, you can also use Google’s Android Flash Tool to flash OTA or stock images manually.

The issues fixed in this release are:

  • Fixed an issue where the system UI would sometimes crash after issuing or interacting with notifications.
  • Fixed an issue that caused devices to crash in some cases.
  • Fixed the issue where the recording window got stuck while recording a video.
  • Fixed the issue where sometimes the device could not be interacted with after a reboot.
  • Fixed an issue where device alarms would sometimes reset after installing a system update.

Pixel devices eligible for Android 14 QPR1 beta are:

  • Pixel 5a
  • Pixel 6
  • Pixel 6 Pro
  • Pixel 6a
  • Pixel 7
  • Pixel 7 Pro
  • Pixel 7a
  • Pixel Folding
  • pixel tablet

It is stated that Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 in particular are not eligible for this update. These devices are expected to receive Android 14, but this seems to be the end of the road for these phones. Pixel 5 will officially receive its latest update in October, while Pixel 4a 5G will work until November.
