OpenAI is one of the most important technology companies today. Services like GPT, DALL-E, the new version of which we only learned about yesterday, and of course ChatGPT, which noted before and after in the relationship of ordinary companies with artificial intelligence, made the company practically unknown two years ago is present today in a way that would they probably didn’t even represent themselves.
In recent months, however These were not days of wine and roses for the companybecause it had to face problems like the one it experienced in Italy, where access to ChatGPT was blocked for several weeks, criticism for wrong answers provided by its chatbot and, as a recurring problem, criticism from those responsible for the data used to train various generative models.
In response to these types of issues, one of the elements that OpenAI highlighted when launching DALL-E 3 is that image creators of any type (painters, illustrators, photographers, etc.) will be able to tell the company who do not want their creations used in future training processes your AI. A welcome measure, but one that might be insufficient, as the prevailing view is that it should be the other way around, i.e. that OpenAI should have prior consent from creators to use their images.
This system Log in At the moment it’s a request from the creators (writers, artists, etc.), but maybe soon the company will be forced to adopt this approach because yesterday, a group of renowned authors filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for using their texts to train their AI models. The suit was filed in New York by 17 writers and The Authors Guild, a union of writers of the United States. These are the signatories to the lawsuit, which you can read here, listed alphabetically by name:
As you can see, there are some authors on the list who are quickly recognizable because they signed bestsellers in different genres. The most successful on the list is of course George RR Martin, creator of Game of Thronesbut we also see other very familiar names such as John Grisham, Michael Connelly and Douglas Preston to name a few.
As for The Authors Guild (I have to admit I love the name “The Authors Guild”), it is a veteran union founded in 1912 that today It has more than 13,000 membersmaking it the oldest and largest professional organization of published writers in the United States.
With demand, It is to resolve whether copyright has been infringed, by using their works to train the GPT and ChatGPT models, i.e. the LLM (Large Language Model), which, by adopting this content into its training, can subsequently reproduce the writing style of these authors.
This request OpenAI probably wasn’t too surprisedand in fact it’s hard not to relate it to something we told you yesterday about the DALL-E 3 news, that this new version of the company’s generative image model will reject requests that demand an image in the style of a living artist. It will be rare, very rare, if GPT-5 or even any update to GPT-4 doesn’t add the same text generation feature.
