Chinese scientists have developed the first full-size spider silk fiber from genetically modified silkworms that is six times stronger than body armor.

This was reported by Xinhua, according to Ukrinform’s report.

Researchers at Donghua University in Shanghai are conducting research to develop sustainable, environmentally friendly, high-strength and ultra-strong alternatives to unstable synthetic fibers such as nylon.

To do this, they studied the properties of nylon and Kevlar, the materials used in body armor, and proposed their own theories about the nature of elasticity and strength.

Applying this to the structure of silk fibers, scientists have determined the parameters that these fibers must meet in order to be elastic and extremely strong.

The silkworms’ genes were then modified to synthesize all polyamide fibers of spider silk, which have high tensile strength and exceptional elasticity.

According to the researchers, the results pave the way for spider silk to be commercialized as a sustainable alternative to synthetic fibers that can be used in a wide range of products, from surgical sutures to comfortable body armor.

As Ukrinform reports, a group of scientists managed to completely sequence the human Y chromosome for the first time.
