The Open Wallet Foundation (OWF) has supported many big brands including Google and Microsoft. Only Apple is still missing from the list.

The future of the digital wallet now looks bright as many big brands have committed to it. During the Open Source Summit in Bilbao, Microsoft announced its involvement, while Google announced its commitment to support the project at the end of August.

Microsoft’s news is important for support, but it’s Google’s that makes the Linux Foundation (LF) happy. Today there are two major digital wallet managers: Google (via Android) and Apple (via iOS/iPhone). Now that one of the two is on board, the OWF can take big steps forward.

Digital wallet

OpenWallet founder Daniel Goldscheider emphasizes in a conversation what the platform does and doesn’t do. “We do not provide identifying information or create standards. The OWF is not a competitor of the OpenID Foundation or the Open Identity Exchange (OIX). We use these standards to build software with a common core that everyone can use in their digital wallets.”

OWF’s role is to ensure that all digital wallets work together. Everything has to be open (source), secure and versatile.

We use standards to build software with a common core that everyone can use in their digital wallets.

OpenWallet founder Daniel Goldscheider

Goldscheider points out your digital identity in his statement. “Today you have everything on a mobile phone, from tickets, cars, boarding passes and loyalty cards.” In Belgium, your ID card and driving license will soon be added. The government is currently working on a solution to this.

“Behind all of these elements is a digital, trusted ecosystem into which everything is grafted. The world is becoming more digital every day. Therefore, it is very important to use open source to build an ecosystem that works with open standards.”

Google as a “Premier Member”

Google will increase its commitment during the Open Source Summit. Ola Ben Har, Google’s head of developer relations around payments, takes to the main stage with a clear purpose.

“At Google, we spend a lot of time providing an ecosystem with the right tools and open source implications to achieve a goal. For example, the Android security team works closely with other security vendors around the world to develop open source, hardware-backed solutions for use in new and existing cases.”

Google already shares code with the OWF, more precisely within it Identity proof library code which has been open source since 2020. Now it has become a “Premier Member” of the group. The search giant is benefiting from the success of the digital identity project. Android is the most popular operating system in the smartphone world. The fact that your phone will soon replace your wallet is another advantage.

Microsoft is also participating

After Google, Microsoft is now on board to work with all other parties within the OWF. Pamela Dingle, director of identity standards at Microsoft, emphasizes that the company has been working with parties to develop standards around open identities for more than 10 years.

We expect that the introduction of a digital ID card and driver’s license will accelerate the digital wallet in our country.

The fact that Microsoft Pay (formerly Microsoft Wallet) has never really been a success in the past could also be a big reason why the software maker is joining the OWF.

Dingle: “We are pleased to expand our commitment to developing best practices around digital wallet security, interoperability and compliance.”

Just your smartphone

We are primarily familiar with the use of digital wallets as a way to pay with a tap on your smartphone via Apple Pay or Google Wallet. It’s not clear how many people use the service today, but those who once used it are reluctant to return to the traditional route.

With the introduction of digital ID cards and driving licenses, you will soon no longer have to carry a wallet around. From then on, your identity can also be verified digitally. We expect our digital wallet to gain momentum with the launch of this project. We can only welcome the fact that a party like the OWF supports collaboration between all types of platforms via open source.
