Slower Than Light: Space Navigation in the Starfield thanks to the mod

Several weeks have passed since the arrival of the Starfield, Bethesda’s much-anticipated game, with its pros and cons, has generally received a good reception from both critics and players who have already tried it. In my case, I’ve commented on it on occasion, I think it has more lights than shadows. And what’s worth acknowledging is that Bethesda seems to be paying close attention to user feedback with the intention of getting to work.

On the other hand, Bethesda is one of those studios (and there really aren’t that many that act this way) that They support the existence of a large and very active community of modders. The opposite example is others like Rockstar or at the top of the Nintendo podium who do not hesitate for a moment to send a cease and desist notice and even sue these creators who only want to create a richer and more varied gaming experience.

Bethesda though acknowledges the work of these creators and greatly appreciates it. So, practically simultaneously with the launch of the game, it was confirmed that official modding tools are already in the works, which will be released sometime in 2024. When we posted news about these tools, Nexus Mods had 1250 mods for Starfield and 30 collections. As of the publication of this news, its total number has already reached 2,991 mods and 81 collections. And that’s before the official tools are released, so once they’re released, their number will skyrocket.

One of the weaknesses of the game is that it does not offer space navigation, that is, we cannot freely travel through space to go from one planet to another and travel through star systems at speeds that are currently unthinkable. So, since Bethesda hasn’t built this option into the game (if they choose to, of course), we’ve been dependent on the modding community. And yes, I’m writing this in the past tense because modder 105gun created Slowerthanlight, a mod for Starfield that allows star navigation. The mod is completely free and can be downloaded from Nexus Mods.

To make navigation easier, this mod configures some keys with which we can adjust the speed of the ship we are currently driving. Maximum customization in this regard it will allow us to navigate at several hundred times the speed of lightsomething that is completely insane in the real world, but in the context of a game like Starfield, it is necessary to be able to travel interplanetary distances in a short amount of time.

The functioning of the mod is not perfect and Navigation may be interrupted by some loading screen, but even with that it is already an excellent improvement. However, the question remains whether Bethesda will finally decide to implement this desired feature (even if it retains the quick navigation with maps) or, of course, whether the operation of this mod (or similar) can be improved with the arrival of tools. officers.
