Amazon acquires a minority stake in Anthropic. This AI startup develops models that are already being adopted by large companies as alternatives to those developed by OpenAI and Google.

Google has Bard, Microsoft has its partnership with OpenAI, but Amazon doesn’t really have an ace in the AI competition. An investment of four billion dollars in Anthropic is intended to change that. Amazon will not use this money to take over the company, but will instead acquire a minority stake.

One can see Anthropic, among other things, as a competitor to OpenAI. The company has developed an alternative to ChatGPT with Claude and Claude 2 and is planning even more powerful generative AI models. AWS has previously integrated Anthropic’s model into its Bedrock solution, Zoom has integrated Claude into its platform via APIs, and Salesforce has also integrated Anthropic’s AI solutions into its cloud. It Great language model by Anthropic is, in other words, quite relevant.

Amazon will initially set aside $1.25 billion. If the investment goes well, it will increase to a total of four billion dollars. This benefits Anthropic, which wanted to raise investments amounting to five billion dollars in the coming years and thus already has the majority of the money within reach.

Smarter costs money

According to Anthropic, to develop Claude-Next, which will be ten times more powerful than today’s best models, at least a billion dollars will be needed over the next year and a half. Amazon’s investments are therefore urgently needed to build new and better LLMs. Anthropic also offers a subscription formula for the Claude chatbot, but it doesn’t pay the bills.

Anthropic will work with AWS to develop its new models. To further develop its models, the company will use the Trainium and Inferentia chips from the world’s largest cloud provider. Salesforce and Zoom have also previously invested in the company, as have several investment companies.

It seems like AWS has high hopes for Anthropic and is trying to build some sort of relationship itself similar to that of Microsoft and OpenAI. High investments are crucial for this. For example, Microsoft has already invested around eleven billion dollars in OpenAI for the development of GPT-3(.5) and GPT-4.
