The LG Gram Fold is the latest model to join the lineup of hybrid flexible/foldable screen devices. There aren’t too many to choose from and it’s still an elite product, but the ones that do exist share some characteristics: spectacular design and stratospheric selling price.

LG announced a foldable screen for use in laptops earlier this year. The South Korean manufacturer is one of the largest in display screens and has its own technology and production capacity for this type of component. It has now announced mass production of the design, which will debut with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, followed by the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold and more recently the HP Specter Foldable.

It is foldable with 17-inch flexible OLED screen diagonal with a native resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels. The design allows it to be folded inward, resulting in two 12.3-inch screens with a resolution of 1920 x 1280 pixels.

The device includes a detachable keyboard for those who prefer physical keys, and a stylus to use its multi-touch panel for drawing or taking notes. Thanks to this, the device can offer the options of a convertible device: laptop, tablet and desktop.

Stacking uses the platform as an engine Intel Raptor Lake and specifically the Core i5-1335U processor with 10 cores and 12 threads, integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics and a TDP of just 15 watts. Considering that pants like the ones this laptop uses get a lot of use, the focus is more on efficiency and autonomy than performance.

It is complemented by 16 GB of 6000 MHz LPDDR5 memory and a 512 GB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD. The memory is soldered to the motherboard and is not user upgradeable, but the SSD takes up an M.2 slot, so in theory it should be replaceable. The computer has a 1080p IR camera with facial recognition support and comes with a 65-watt power adapter.

There is a limited set of ports, but they are of a good standard, and Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 Type-C. It has three speakers compatible with Dolby Atmos in a number that is supposed to offer stereo sound regardless of the orientation of the screen. It includes an Intel AX211 wireless card with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1 support. LG includes a Bluetooth keyboard with a cover that doubles as a stand and allows for different angles of use. With a 72Wh battery and a weight of 1.25 kg, it will be the lightest 17″ foldable device to date. However, with dimensions of 378.2 x 280 x 9.4 mm, it will not be the thinnest.

With Windows 11 pre-installed, the LG Gram Fold will stand $3,725 when it goes on sale in South Korea. International availability is unknown. In addition to this own model, it is not excluded that LG’s flexible screen will also be used by other integrators. It will be the only way to make these types of innovative models cheaper, but the price is impossible for consumers.
