The American photo agency Getty Images has launched its own image generator. It is driven by generative AI and trained using the company’s massive image database.
Getty Images subscribers also now have an image generator powered by generative AI partnered with Nvidia. The new tool is based on the extensive collection of images that the company has licensed.
The AI image generator is based on the Nividia Picasso model, also part of the Nvidia AI Foundation platform. Users simply enter a prompt describing what they want and the system generates an image suggestion. The model works with the data and content from Getty Images itself.
In itself it’s a surprising twist, Getty Images and AI didn’t seem to be the best combination so far. There are even (threatened) lawsuits, for example against Stability AI for illegal data scraping.
The financial aspect seems to be completely taken care of with your own image generator. Getty Images says it has put together a model that compensates its top creators, and its unlimited compensation system has been expanded to include this tool. Creators of images used for training also receive compensation. This also means that Getty accepts full responsibility for any disputes.
This model was trained only on images from Getty Images and is fundamentally completely safe to use. There shouldn’t really be any disputes with third parties. So users don’t have to worry about the training data.
These users can download and license any image they generate at no additional cost. Getty Images does not add these images to its image database and therefore cannot be licensed to other users. Additionally, the company simply doesn’t want to merge its authentic content with AI-generated images.
However, prompts, created images and feedback are used to further train the AI, says Getty. The system is also set to block “problematic” images.
