Format 60% It has a great response in the gaming sector and most major manufacturers try to have options in their portfolio. Today, ROCCAT presents us with a scaled-down version of one of its most popular products, the compact and aesthetically pleasing keyboard we’ve been testing for the past few weeks.

The advantages of compact keyboards for gaming, they are obvious: first of all, they convince aesthetically (especially on small tables), they are more comfortable and, once you get used to them, they produce less muscle fatigue during long sessions than a heavy full keyboard. In addition, they are perfect for typing and simple office scenarios where the use of a numeric keypad or function keys is occasional.

ROCCAT delivers its Magma Mini in a compact package and its lightness will surprise you at first contact. It is IP33 certified, which is a guarantee when it comes to resistance to water spills and dust, and ensures good operation for years. Included in the kit is a short guide with very useful shortcuts to access advanced features without the need for software.

ROCCAT Magma Mini, technical specifications

  • 61 keys. 20 current presses. Membrane system.
  • Fixed USB cable with a length of 1.8 meters
  • 5 independent RGB zones
  • IP33 certification
  • Dimensions 308mm x 132.2mm x 36.6mm.
  • Weight 406 gr.
  • Recommended price 49.99 euros

To achieve such a compact size, the function keys are integrated with a number of numbers and symbols, while the dedicated FN key can be changed. By combining FN + G, we activate the game mode, which cancels the Windows key and locks the cursors, something practical and quick to avoid mistakes.

Considering that we are dealing with a membrane keyboard, the feelings are very good. The ROCCAT has integrated keys that are slightly narrower and taller than other products I’ve tested, and this provides a greater sense of precision and nice return without the key “dancing” to the side. It only takes a few minutes to trust the keyboard and the touch tells us when the key is pressed correctly and when not, so it is very pleasant to use.

Six soft rubber feet have been installed on the base to prevent slipping (which is important given its light weight) and two folding legs allow it to be raised a bit (we’d like a bit more tilt, but we understand that’s a personal preference). The cable, correct for this price range, cannot be removed. AND a small handicap Because some users will want a keyboard so compact that they can carry it occasionally.

The ROCCAT Magma Mini has a more generous palm rest than many of its competitors, making it more comfortable at the cost of being slightly wider than expected. Nothing serious, but a factor to consider for potential buyers.

Although not explicitly stated, this device is compatible with Swarm of ROCCAT, the brand’s proprietary configuration solution. With this software you can customize the behavior of many functions, control the RGB lighting in detail or create profiles for different uses that we can load quickly. It’s not the most intuitive in the sector, but it’s improved in recent iterations and it’s worth doing a little research to get the most out of the peripheral.

Conclusions

For a modest investment (recommended price 49.90 euros), the ROCCAT Magma Mini is a good entry into compact gaming keyboards. The construction is remarkable, offers a solid response in games, is quiet and aesthetically very usable.

We are facing a periphery which requires some adaptation (especially due to the absence of separate cursors), so it does not hurt to make the first foray of this type and, after adaptation, decide on more expensive models with more functions. If we don’t get used to it, we won’t spend too much and have a great keyboard for secondary use.

Of course, we can’t ask for the feel of keyboards that double or triple the price of this design here, but that’s not the goal either. We are earlier a gaming product that also works on PC an office where we just want a comfortable, compact keyboard with some degree of customization.
