Samsung claims that LPCAMM is up to 60% smaller than DIMM, delivers 50% better performance and is 70% more energy efficient.

Last year, Dell developed an alternative to laptop memory. Instead of the conventional DIMM modules, CAMM is being developed, short for “Compression Attached Memory Module”. According to Dell, a successor to SO-DIMM was necessary because this standard was gradually reaching its limits.

Classic RAM modules are based on a 25-year-old design that has become quite complex. The connections between memory and laptop are unnecessarily long, which increases energy consumption and reduces maximum speed.

While we initially feared that Dell wanted to develop its own standard, last year the manufacturer donated CAMM technology to JEDEC with the goal of reducing the size of current DIMM modules.

With LPDDR5X-6400, Samsung is now the first company to provide an LPCAMM module for laptops. According to the manufacturer, the module delivers a memory bandwidth of 7.5 Gbit/s. The board is 60 percent smaller than two DIMM modules and delivers half the power while being 70 percent more energy efficient.

Available in 2024

Samsung has validated LPCAMM compatibility with Intel. Other brands such as AMD, Qualcomm or Apple are not yet mentioned in the announcement. Samsung emphasizes that it is in discussions Next GenerationSystems with major customers this year and also sees great potential in implementation in data centers.

Today Samsung only shows DDR5 modules with the CAMM standard. DDR6 is certainly an option for the future, DDR4 is not being discussed.

Samsung is currently testing interoperability with other manufacturers to make the memory modules commercially available to everyone in 2024.
