Meta’s WhatsApp messenger has changed its mind about launching a news streaming service in Russia after threats from Russian regulators and politicians to block it.

A representative of Meta told this to The Moscow Times, Ukrinform reported.

“The product will not be available for users in Russia in the near future,” Meta said.

As mentioned, in the coming weeks Messenger will allow anyone who wants to create their own information channel, but in Russia this will not be possible.

WhatsApp may be blocked in Russia if “hostile channels with prohibited information” are found, Roskomnadzor said.

WhatsApp service announced the launch of the channel creation function in 150 countries. It is assumed that users can place information on them confidentially or retrieve it without control and censorship.

According to Ukrinform, deputies of the upper and lower houses of the Russian parliament called for a review of the official position of the Russian Federation regarding the work of WhatsApp, owned by the Meta company, after the messenger announced the launch of information channels.
