Legendary developer John Carmack, father of Doom and Quake, expects AGI to be realistic as a prototype by 2030. He made the announcement on YouTube, where his AGI start-up Keen is making the recruitment of high-profile Richard Sutton official. According to Carmack, Sutton is described as the Godfather of Reinforced Learning.

In the video, Sutton argues that AGI is not possible with the current technology of LLMs (Large Language Models). Together with Carmack, he sees further opportunities where we need to move away from the current monolithic nature of AI models. “Too often we tend to think in neat ‘boxes,’” says Carmack.

“A human brain shows that intelligence is much more complex and requires a distributed model. What is crucial is how an AI can incorporate its experiences into its worldview. How can AI predict things that will happen in the future, and how should it have both internally and externally imposed motivations?”

Doom and Quake as an AI engine

Fun detail: Carmack has been courted by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the past. Since he had no AI experience at the time, Carmack rejected the proposal. Since then, he has always been curious about the advances in AI. His start-up Keen emerged from this.

It goes without saying that if AGI is a goal for Keen, Carmack is optimistic about the future. Today, Keen is just a handful of people, but can expect $20 million in investments to grow.

“We’re six, seven, eight years away from something really big and important that will be publicly visible.” Carmack emphasizes that Keen has no pressure or deadline to bring a product to market.

Finally, he subtly adds that the current state of AI has become a reality thanks, among other things, to Quake and Doom. “After the sudden success of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake sparked GPU demand in the 1990s. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, recognized the opportunity early and sparked a GPU revolution in gaming and later in other areas, including AI.” In other words, he is still proud of his contribution to the industry.
