Firefox 118 has been officially released as a new stable version of the Mozilla web browser, this time coming with automatic translations available by default and privacy improvements among others.
To begin with, we have automatic translations, which do not require copying and pasting text, but are able to perform the process on a web page in a similar way to Chrome. However, unlike Google’s web browser, Firefox 118 does translation locally without relying on any online servicewhich represents a plus in privacy compared to other similar options.
Obviously, the translations aren’t really automatic, or at least not in the sense that they work that way by default. The user has to click on the button that appears on the right side of the address bar, then select the source language and then the one they want to translate to.
The translation implementation is similar to Chrome, p different options to deal with when encountering web pages in a particular language, but with the advantage of not relying on online services. The feature is still in beta and as an example we provide an example with the Firefox Web Audio API.
And speaking of the web audio API (Web Audio API), now uses the FDLIBM math library on all operating systems to improve protection against fingerprints, which leads to better protection of the user’s anonymity. On the other hand, font visibility has been limited to those present in the system and to language pack fonts to mitigate fingerprints in private browsing windows.
Google Meet video effects and blurred backgrounds are now features that can be used from within Firefox, which has also been retroactively extended to those using version 115 of the Mozilla web browser.
Firefox 118 introduced ten new CSS math functions, a departure from the more external parts usually handled by regular users: round, mod, rem, pow, sqrt, hypot, log, exp, abs and sign.
Details about Mozilla Firefox 118 are available in the release notes, while the application can be obtained for Windows, macOS and Linux in the corresponding download section. If you have it installed, it can be forced to update via Main Menu > Help > “About Firefox”, although for Linux it’s logical to wait for it to arrive via the distribution’s repositories, Snap and/or Flathub (Flatpak). On Android, it is provided through the Google Play Store.
