Ovidio Guzmanarrested in Mexico last January, was extradited to the United States on September 15 and jailed in Chicago, where he awaits trial for drug trafficking.

Garland condemned the Sinaloa cartel and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) are “fuelling an epidemic” of fentanyl in the United States, where more than 70,000 people died from overdoses of the synthetic opioid last year alone.

The cartels buy chemicals from China that they use to make fentanyl, which they sell in the U.S. from clandestine laboratories in Mexico, Garland said.

For this reason, he explained that two Chinese nationals were arrested for working for a company that sells chemicals used to produce fentanyl.
