macOS Sonoma better optimizes long-term battery life for the 13-inch MacBook Air with M2 chip, according to Apple’s software update release notes. “Battery health management has been updated on the 13-inch MacBook Air with M2 chip to better optimize long-term battery life,” according to the release notes.
Apple hasn’t provided further details about the exact optimizations it’s made, and there haven’t been any mass complaints about battery health from customers who own this July 2022 13-inch MacBook Air model. You can find information about battery status by opening System Preferences and clicking Battery.
In a support document, Apple explains how Battery Health Management works:
Battery health management is designed to increase battery life by reducing the rate of chemical aging. This feature does this by tracking your battery’s temperature history and charging pattern.
Battery Health Management may temporarily reduce the maximum battery charge based on collected measurements. This happens when necessary to ensure the battery is charged to a level optimized for use, reducing wear and tear on the battery, and slowing its chemical aging.
macOS Sonoma is scheduled to be released today after more than three months of beta testing, with major new features including interactive desktop widgets, gaming mode, the ability to add websites as web apps to the Dock, various improvements to Safari, and more . We have previously shared the list of Macs compatible with the update.
