The Hollywood Writers Guild said its members could return to work Wednesday as they decide whether to approve a three-year contract that provides salary increases and some protection measures around the use of artificial intelligence, among other benefits.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) leadership voted unanimously to end the strike, the guild said in a statement.

The union’s 11,500 members now have until Oct. 9 to vote on the proposed contract.

The WGA said the estimated value of the deal is $233 million annually.

Film and television writers quit their jobs in May after failing to reach agreements with major studios, including Netflix, Walt Disney and Warner Bros Discovery.

The writers seem to have received concessions across the board, with pay increases over the course of their three-year contract. higher contributions to healthcare and pensions, and articles on artificial intelligence.

Under the agreement, the studios agreed to meet with the guild at least twice a year to discuss plans for using artificial intelligence in film development and production.

Studios are not expressly prohibited from using AI to create content. However, writers have the right to sue if their works are used to train AI.

Writers can use AI when writing scripts, but the company cannot require the use of the software. Studios must also tell the author if any material was created by artificial intelligence.

In other areas, the guild said it had received assurances of minimum staffing for writers’ rooms, a key issue for many of its members. Staffing will be determined by the number of episodes per season. Over three years, minimum wage rates will increase by more than 12%.

In addition, payments for the use of television programs and films outside the United States will increase. bonus for the most popular streaming programs.

“These are critical protections that companies have told us to our face that they will NEVER give us,” writer Adam Conover, a member of the guild’s negotiating committee, wrote on Platform X’s social media platform.

“But because of our solidarity, because they literally can’t make a dollar without us, they caved in, then broke and gave us what we deserve. WE WON,” Conover said.

TV journalist David Slack said: “Our strike was necessary. Our strike was effective. Our strike is a victory.”

The end of the strike means daytime and late-night talk shows can return to air. Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” said on social media that he will be back with new episodes starting Friday.

“My writers and Real Time are back!” Maher wrote.

Maher and Drew Barrymore angered writers by announcing this month that their talk shows would resume until after the strike.

Ending the WGA strike will not return Hollywood to normal. The actors union SAG-AFTRA left the union in July and remains on strike.
